The animation for this work was created by carefully tracking the movement found in pornographic video while simultaneously creating forms that mimic the source material.
Laughter arises from the perceived mismatch between the physical perception and the abstract representation of some thing, person or action. Arthur Schopenhauer, Theory of Incongruity
In my animations this mismatch is used to redirect or shift the position in which you understand something to be. The animations subject is revealed not through the actual forms but in the viewer’s recognition of the rhythmic movement suggested. This work humorously disrupts and deflates the sexual while emptying their reductive forms of meaning that is commonly associated with painterly abstraction. These playful abstractions suggest that
sex truly is in the brain.
Sound on all four video projects was created in collaboration with Jesse Goffin.
